LECA® (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) is a durable, lightweight drainage aggregate commonly used in large planters, raised beds and landscaping projects.

Made from kiln-fired clay, it forms hard, porous pellets that improve drainage while reducing overall weight compared to traditional aggregates.

This 0–20 mm grade is ideal as a drainage layer in planters, helping prevent waterlogging and improving root health. It can also be used as a lightweight fill to reduce compost volume in deeper planters.

Supplied in 50 litre bags, our LECA® is suitable for both small and larger projects, with tiered pricing available for higher quantities.

Frequently Asked Questions About LECA®

What is LECA® used for in planters?

LECA® is commonly used as a drainage layer at the base of planters. It allows excess water to drain away from roots and helps reduce the overall weight of larger or deeper planters.

How much LECA® do I need?

This depends on the size of your planter and the depth of the drainage layer you want. As a guide, a 50 litre bag will cover roughly 0.5 m² at a depth of 100 mm. Larger planters will require more.

If you’re buying planters from us, LECA® can be added directly by selecting Add LECA® on the relevant planter page options.

How long does delivery take?
Typically 3 to 4 working days within the UK.

Can LECA® be mixed with compost or soil?

LECA® is typically used as a separate drainage layer rather than mixed through compost. Mixing it with soil can reduce its drainage effectiveness, especially in planters.

Is LECA® suitable for outdoor use?Yes. LECA® is frost-resistant, long-lasting and inert, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor planters, as well as landscaping applications.
