How To Install Artificial Plants In Tall Planters

Artificial plants are commonly used in tall planters for offices, restaurants, hotels, reception areas, retail developments and outdoor seating areas. Because artificial plants do not require soil, the installation method is often quite different from that used for real planting. This guide explains a typical method used to securely install artificial plants in tall metal planters whilst creating a neat, professional finish.

Support Shelf Installation

Most tall planters are much deeper than required for artificial planting. Rather than filling the entire planter, a support shelf is installed inside the planter to create a platform for the artificial plants. The shelf is normally positioned between 150mm and 300mm below the top of the planter depending on the plants being used.

Securing The Artificial Plants

Many artificial plants are supplied in small weighted pots. These pots are positioned on the internal shelf and fixed in place using adhesive. The shelf height is planned around the specific plants being used, ensuring the finished planting sits naturally within the planter and achieves the desired overall height.

Creating A Finished Surface

Once the plants have been secured, the remaining void around the pots is filled using lightweight packing blocks. A geotextile membrane is then laid across the top. The surface can be finished with decorative gravel, slate chippings or, for a more permanent commercial installation, a resin-bound aggregate to create a neat permeable surface.

Can Artificial Plants Be Replaced In The Future?

This depends on the surface finish used. Loose finishes such as gravel or slate chippings can usually be removed relatively easily. Resin-bound aggregate creates a more permanent surface and may need to be broken out and replaced if the planting arrangement is changed in the future.

How Much Weight Does This Save Compared To Soil?

Because the planter is not filled with soil, the overall weight can be considerably lower than a traditionally planted planter of the same size. This can make transport, installation and future relocation much easier.

Will Artificial Plant Planters Blow Over?

As artificial plant installations are much lighter than soil-filled planters, tall plants can catch the wind. For outdoor installations, planters can be manufactured with fixing tabs that allow them to be securely bolted to the ground. This helps prevent movement, theft and overturning whilst still allowing the planter to be relocated in the future.
