Do Metal Planters Need Drainage Holes?
Most outdoor planters require drainage holes to allow excess rainwater to escape. Without drainage holes, water can build up inside the planter, causing the soil to become saturated and potentially leading to root rot and poor plant health. Even planters containing artificial plants will usually require drainage if they are positioned outdoors.
Why Good Drainage Matters
Plants generally prefer moist soil rather than permanently wet soil. Drainage holes allow excess water from rainfall and watering to leave the planter, helping to prevent waterlogging. Poor drainage can lead to saturated soil, weak plant growth and, in severe cases, root rot. Whilst some customers request planters without drainage holes because they do not want water reaching the surface below, trapping water inside the planter often creates bigger problems than allowing it to drain away.
How Drainage Is Added To Our Planters
Our planters typically have drainage holes positioned in the base of the planter. The holes are arranged in a line down the centre at approximately 200mm intervals using 15mm diameter holes. This provides a simple and effective way for excess water to reach the drainage layer and drain away from the planter. We recommend combining drainage holes with a suitable drainage aggregate such as LECA and, where possible, planter feet to improve water flow beneath the planter.
Situations Where Drainage Holes May Not Be Required
There are some situations where drainage holes may not be necessary. Indoor planters used with artificial plants are a common example, as they are not exposed to rainfall and do not contain living roots. Decorative indoor planters used as outer containers may also be supplied without drainage holes. These situations are generally the exception rather than the rule, but they are often valid reasons for omitting drainage holes.

Yes. Planter feet raise the planter slightly above the ground, allowing water to drain away more effectively from beneath the planter. This helps prevent water becoming trapped under the planter base.
What Is A Baseless Planter?
A baseless planter has no metal base and is placed directly onto soil. They are often used where unrestricted root growth is required, such as for larger shrubs and trees, whilst still providing the appearance of a matching planter scheme.
